Empire of Nerath

Up until about 400 years ago or so, the Moon Hills and the surrounding Nentir Vale were thinly settled borderlands, home to quarrelsome human hill chieftains and remote realms of nonhumans such as dwarves and elves. Giants, minotaurs, orcs, ogres, and goblins plagued the area. Ruins such as those on the Gray Downs or the ring-forts atop the Old Hills date back to these days, as do stories of the hero Vendar and the dragon of the Nentir.

The Empire of Nerath rose in the South sometime before this, but for many years it did not turn its attention to the Vale. Eventually though, human settlers began to move up the Nentir, establishing towns such as Fastormel, Harkenwold, Winterhaven, and Fallcrest.

Scholars and historians still tell of the many deeds of Nerathan heroes, and the empire spread far and accomplished much. The language known now as Common is the language of the Empire of Nerath.

However, like all empires it eventually crumbled and fell. This process began about 100 years ago, and the Vale was left with dwindling resources as the empire was forced to focus its attention elsewhere. Ninety years ago a fierce horde of orcs known as the Bloodspear descended from Stonemarch and swept over the Vale. The remnants of the empire’s forces in the Vale were no match for the orc horde, which went on to wreak havoc all across the Nentir Vale. In the years since the Bloodspear War the empire has fallen almost completely, and certainly exerts no influence in the region. Some meager trade is conducted with the South, but few in the Vale know of current events there.
